Sake production has been practiced in Kagoshima for a long time, just like in other parts of Japan, but the warm climate does not require high quality sake.
From around 1500 , the technique of distilling moromi to make shochu was introduced and took root in Satsuma.
In Edo, Akune shochu was more expensive than Nada sake. (Edo Shopping Guide 1824, Bunsei 7)
Kagoshima Sake Brewery Kurose's traditional brewery is located in Akune, on a slope overlooking the East China Sea, where they work hard every day to make shochu with the blessings of the sea breeze and yeast from the brewery that has lived there since ancient times.
