A historic first! Kagoshima Prefecture Honkaku Shochu Tasting Competition Sweet potato shochu continues to win the championship
The Kagoshima Prefecture Honkaku Shochu Tasting Competition, which has been held since 1954 , where breweries have competed to improve the quality of their sake, requires an extremely high level of sensory evaluation, and the difficulty is particularly high because Kagoshima Prefecture boasts the largest number of breweries in Japan.
This sweet potato shochu, which achieved the remarkable feat of winning first place in the sweet potato shochu category at the tasting event (83 breweries, 161 points ) for the second consecutive year following 2021 , is now available for limited release!
All of the raw sweet potatoes are harvested and prepared on the same day, and Hinohikari rice from Kagoshima Prefecture is used for the koji rice.
What is particularly noteworthy about this shochu is its filtration.
In order to eliminate as much of the oily smell derived from fatty acids as possible, sweet potatoes are usually filtered heavily before being sold, but the fatty acids derived from high-quality sweet potatoes dug that morning produce a more mineral-like flavor, so contrary to the norm, they are sold with almost no filtration at all.
Please enjoy the balance of flavors.
